Timor Leste Birth Friendly Facility Refurbishment – July 2015
A team of 11 including 2 from Bribie Island Qld, spent 12 days in Timor Leste repairing the birth friendly facility in the village of Remexio. The facility was in need of some TLC, which included cleaning, painting, adding a verandah and fixing the roof. The team members worked long days to get the job done and they were assisted by members of the Rotaract Club of Aileu who displayed great building skills and translation skills. Six local men were selected to help on the project so they could learn new skills and have a sense of ownership of the project.
24 July 2015 marked one year since a child was last paralyzed by wild polio virus in Nigeria. Final laboratory results on all specimens for the full 12 month period are expected by September 2015, which, if clear for poliovirus, may lead to Nigeria being removed from the list of polio-endemic countries. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative commends the hard work of the Nigerian government, partners, religious and community leaders, and health workers for such strong progress towards stopping polio. Yet the job is not yet finished, and it is crucial that commitment from all stakeholders is maintained.
